Tribeca Spotlight: Lola Versus

 

Film: Lola Versus

  

TFF Synopsis: Indie ingénue Greta Gerwig stars as Lola, a New Yorker on the verge of 30 who finds herself abruptly dumped mere weeks before her long-anticipated wedding. Single for the first time in eight years, Lola attempts to rebuild with the help of her friends, sweet and supportive Henry (Hamish Linklater) and no-nonsense chatterbox Alice (co-screenwriter Zoe Lister-Jones), only to find that suddenly navigating the unfriendly waters of dating and relationships makes letting go and moving on much more easily said than done. 

I found out about this film through a fan of Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman who has made a mini US debut in the AMC original drama The Killing (and he was a past Spotlight of the Day.) The trailer looks cute. In my world "cute" can go  2 ways-- really good or horribly bad. I have found that I tend to enjoy this kind Eat, Pray, Love, woman finding herself with the help of quirky friends and accompanied by an indie soundtrack. I will def. try to catch this.

Tribeca Spotlight: Any Day Now

Film: Any Day Now

TFF Synopsis: Kept up all night by his neighbor's music, aspiring singer Rudy (Alan Cumming) pounds on the door to discover his neighbor's son Marco, a teenager with Down syndrome, left alone by his drug addicted mother with only the blaring stereo to keep him company. Family Services takes Marco, but days later Rudy sees him on the street and brings him home, where Rudy and his closeted district attorney partner Paul (Garret Dillahunt) become the stable family environment Marco's never had. But when authorities discover Rudy and Paul are gay, the men must battle a biased legal system to adopt the child they have come to love as their own. 

I strongly reccommend that everyone catches this film during the festival. As a strong supporter of the LGBT, I feel that this will be a film that will touch a lot of people for many different reasons. Plus, the acting talent is amazing!

Tribeca Spotlight: 2 Days in New York

 

 

Film: 2 Days in New York

TFF Synopsis: Passionate French photographer Marion (Julie Delpy) and her hip radio host beau Mingus (Chris Rock) live a happily coupled life with their children in a homey New York City apartment. When Marion's eccentric French family descends upon the pair unannounced, the couple is catapulted into two days of escalating mayhem, misunderstandings, and culture clash. Between Marion's delightfully unhinged father (played gleefully by Delpy's real-life Dad, Albert), her sexually frank but juvenile sister, and her sister's boorish boyfriend (also Marion's ex), it will be all Mingus can do to stay sane while the in-laws are in town. 

Chris Rock starring in a French film is a juxtaposition. Which is probably why this is on my "Must See @ TFF" list. I love the idea. Obsessed with it, actually. Chris Rock has always struck me as a person who could take on projects with a bit more substance ( No,  I Think I Love My Wife does not count) so to see him branch out and tackle a film such as this is very exciting. He's rocking the Malcom X crossover hipster glasses and I pray with every fiber of my being that he does not go to his trademark  shtick which has a tendency to pop out ever so sudden. I loved 2 Days in Paris. Thought it was so fresh and witty and made me an instant fan of Julie Delpy. I'm hoping that the same air of humor stands with 2 Days in New York.

Announcement: Tribeca Spotlight

Sorry for the long delay (midterms all week) however, I am excited to announce that I have a new segment called Tribeca Spotlight. As some of you may or may not know Tribeca is in a few weeks and it will be my first time going (and volunteering). For me it is a huge deal and if I had it my way I would do nothing but see all the wonderful films offered at the festival (seriously it's like a delectable buffet of assortments!) Up till the festival I will be highlighting a number of films that will be making their big debut including exclusive interviews from Once in a Lullaby: The PS22 Chorus Story and Sexy Baby!
